Opportunity for a Tunnel Chief Engineer (Sizewell C) working with Balfour Beatty on the Sizewell C Project,


The purpose of the role is:


Provide industry leading experience of subject matter to the delivery team at site, providing technical leadership to all underground operations. Act as the principal in-house advisor to the business for future underground tenders and projects.


Main Duties:

 

  • Provide technical support and management of underground operations across CWA M&T, in particular with regard to TBM design, fabrication, supply and excavation; an Tunnel Shaft Connection packages.
  • Peer review of input and support management of consultants and specialist subcontractors in the production of both permanent and temporary works designs and construction.
  • Lead peer reviews related to subject matter expertise.
  • Advise on 'best' engineering of temporary works and construction methods/sequence.
  • Advise on degree of risk exposure implicit in the work the CWA undertakes and how best to manage associated risks.
  • Ensuring that factors affecting project delivery are identified and addressed in a value-engineered, cost-effective and safe manner and appropriate risk management provisions implemented. 
  • Value engineering to identify optimum design and construction solutions.
  • Advise on construction methods, e.g. sprayed concrete mining, secondary concrete lining, tunnel water management, complex reinforced concrete structures, complex lifting.
  • Create and critique scopes for relevant areas of work.
  • Develop and perform detailed root cause analysis and problem solving for engineering problems.
  • Maintain links and working relationships with specialist consultants and subcontractors.
  • Build and maintain a network of key specialists, both in-house and external.
  • Maintain a high degree of technical competence and an awareness of current sources of external, practical, cost-effective design and construction advice in various specialist areas.
  • Support contracts and determine robust designs and assurance through internal procedures
  • Mentoring of junior members of staff.


Qualifications/Experience : 


Essential

 

  • Up-to-date knowledge of construction methodologies, specifically large scale reinforced concrete structures, tunnelling and Temporary Works.
  • Proficient knowledge of project planning
  • Safe systems of work
  • CDM Regulation and ACOP awareness
  • Ability to work across multiple projects (UK)
  • Confidence to challenge the normal approach to construction
  • Comfortable with working in digital models
  • Leadership
  • Facilitation skills
  • Able to work with complexity and detail
  • Able to form arguments and influence outcomes


Desirable

 

  • Considered as an industry leader in subject matter


Essential

 

  • Chartered Engineer in Civil Engineering or equivalent 
  • Broad on-site experience from across a range of territories 


Desirable

 

  • Experience of working within the requirements of a highly regulated site preferred.
