Overview

 
The purpose of the role is to support and ensure Sizewell C (SZC) Project quality requirements are complied with across the full project life-cycle (Contract award, Design, Procurement, Manufacture, Test, Shipping, Construction/Installation, Test/Commission and Contract close out).


As a Quality Engineer, you will ensure supply chain compliance with contractual quality assurance and quality control requirements. Reporting to the Quality Management Lead (QML), you will support the development and implementation of Project Quality Control Plans, inspection and surveillance activities, and adherence to Integrated Management System (IMS) requirements across your programme.


Working closely with the QML and Quality Delivery Manager (QDM), you will help ensure suppliers establish and maintain effective quality arrangements, drawing on lessons learned from Hinkley Point C. You will provide quality management expertise to project teams, promoting Right First Time (RFT) delivery, effective issue resolution, and the implementation of corrective actions to prevent recurrence.


Acting as an Intelligent Customer during manufacturing and construction, you will help verify that equipment, products, and activities meet contractual, design, and technical requirements. You will also coordinate with suppliers and inspection bodies to ensure risk-based inspection and surveillance plans are developed and effectively implemented.


The role includes conducting supplier surveillance and audits, monitoring quality performance, reporting quality metrics, and assessing supplier and subcontractor performance. Working collaboratively with project teams, supply chain, commercial, design, and assurance functions, you will help ensure quality is delivered safely, efficiently, compliantly, and right first time.

 
Principal Accountabilities, Activities and Decisions


Planning and Documentation


Support the preparation and maintenance of Project Quality Control Plans (PQCPs) for each contract/project;
Produce and maintain quality-related documentation (e.g. procedures, specifications) as required;
Support the implementation of the Quality Execution Plan within the programme, including monitoring compliance and reporting on performance;
Support the development and review of supplier quality requirements within Invitation to Tender (ITT) documentation;
Assist in ensuring that quality management processes are correctly applied across the supply chain;
 

Supply Chain Assurance and Governance


Support the review, acceptance, and monitoring of Contractor Quality Assurance Plans (CQAPs);
Provide support and guidance to contractors on CQAPs, LTQR partitioning strategies, and Quality Related Activities;
Assist in identifying requirements for supply chain audits, support audit delivery, and track resolution of findings;
Support the development and maintenance of effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including contracted inspection entities;
Assist in the early identification and escalation of potential quality issues to enable timely mitigation; e.g. CFSI
 

Inspection, Surveillance, and Testing


Assist in coordinating manufacturing and construction surveillance activities in line with contractual requirements, applying a graded approach based on safety and project importance;
Support the review of supplier Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) to ensure they are fit for purpose and appropriately distributed for internal review and witness allocation;
Assist in establishing, tracking, and reporting inspection witness and hold points within supplier documentation (ITPs, Quality Plans, FUDs);
Coordinate and monitor the efficiency of inspection activities performed by contracted inspection entities;
Participate in joint inspections, surveillance, and audits as required;
 

LTQR and Records Management


Assist in ensuring the deployment of key contractual quality requirements (e.g. GQAS, LTQR Specification, Quality Release Certificates) in accordance with the PQCP;
Support the coordination and implementation of LTQR reviews;
Assist in applying and tracking strategies for progressive provision of LTQRs by contractors;
Support the review and compilation of end-of-manufacturing records to enable quality release and handover;
 

Review, Acceptance, and Close-Out


Coordinate and support the review and acceptance of manufacturing and construction documentation provided by contractors;
Support the monitoring and resolution of non-conformances, including tracking corrective actions;
Assist in the review and acceptance of End of Manufacturing Reports (EoMR), End of Construction Status Reports (ECSR), and End of Erection Status Reports (EESR);
Support the overall process of quality release of equipment to site and handover of areas;
 

Nuclear Safety Accountabilities


This Post will have nuclear safety responsibilities which could have an impact on nuclear safety through the activities that they perform. These are detailed in the Nuclear Baseline.


Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience

 
Position requires experience in project delivery, preferably in the nuclear power sector, with significant focus on project quality,
A solid understanding of the Quality Assurance and Quality Control in major projects across engineering, procurement, manufacturing, construction and commissioning.
A clear and considerable understanding of quality management best practice for deployment by large, complex and contract-led organisations.
Confident and proficient in the use of IT systems and digital tools
knowledge of Quality Systems, ISO 9001, ISO 19443, IAEA GSR-2 and interrelated standards
Confident and articulate communicator, able to prepare presentation material, and comfortable addressing individuals, small groups and very large audiences.
Able to support and implement practical solutions, whilst remaining open to the ideas of others.
Experience of interfacing with project teams and with supply chain organisations.
Analysis of data, preparing reports and making recommendations.

Knowledge of the nuclear sector, ideally new build.
Knowledge & understanding of nuclear site license conditions.

Knowledge of Welding, Non Destructive Testing (NDT), Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE)
 

Qualifications & Experience


HNC/HND qualification or degree in a relevant science or engineering subject, or equivalent qualification.
Experience of implementing a variety of quality related solutions.
Proven track record of delivering results.
Proven experience working in a quality assurance/control environment within the nuclear industry or other relevant safety critical industry.
Proven experience of interaction and resolving issues with a wide range of stakeholders in a multi-cultural environment.
Experience performing supplier audits.


Desirable


Hold a professional accreditation including IRCA certified auditor
Corporate Member or working towards membership of the Chartered Quality Institute & Chartered Quality Professional.
Commercial exposure, especially supplier management.
Experience of interacting with regulators e.g. the ONR.
Knowledge of Improvement Methodologies, Tools & Techniques eg. Lean 6 Sigma
