Planning Manager

The Planning Manager leads planning and programme management across major infrastructure works, ensuring projects are effectively planned, monitored, and controlled to achieve delivery milestones, contractual obligations, and client expectations.


The role includes developing integrated programmes, managing progress reporting, assessing risks and opportunities, supporting commercial and operational teams, and providing strategic planning leadership throughout the project lifecycle. Kier is currently delivering major infrastructure works in support of a nuclear-grade power station as part of one of the UK’s largest energy projects. This role will initially support project delivery through to completion, with the opportunity to contribute to future nuclear projects within the Natural Resources, Nuclear and Networks business unit. Significant experience in infrastructure construction, change management, and impact programme development within an NEC contract environment is essential.


Key Tasks and Accountabilities


Programme Development and Management
• Develop, maintain, and manage fully integrated project programmes using Primavera P6 and/or Microsoft Project.
• Produce baseline and acceptance programmes aligned to scope, methodology, procurement strategy, and delivery phasing.
• Establish critical path activities and monitor performance against key milestones and contract requirements.
• Lead short- and long-term planning across design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and handover.
• Coordinate programme interfaces across disciplines, subcontractors, and stakeholders.


Progress Monitoring and Reporting
• Monitor progress and productivity against plan, and produce weekly and monthly reports, dashboards, look-ahead schedules, and programme narratives.
• Analyse delays, assess impact, and develop mitigation, recovery, and acceleration plans.
• Lead earned value, KPI, and project controls reporting, including visual management outputs where applicable.
• Present programme updates and analysis to senior leadership and client representatives.


Risk, Change, and Commercial Support
• Identify programme risks, constraints, and opportunities, and support risk workshops and assurance reviews.
• Assess change impacts, support extension-of-time submissions, and contribute to forecasting and commercial decision-making.
• Resource load and level programmes accurately to support sequencing and delivery decisions.


Stakeholder, Team, and Tender Support
• Work closely with project managers, engineers, commercial teams, procurement teams, supply chain partners, and clients.
• Mentor and develop planners, and ensure planning standards, governance, and business processes are consistently applied.
• Support bid and tender submissions through programme development, methodology input, logistics strategies, phasing plans, and visual planning outputs.


Key Accountabilities
• Delivery of accurate, contract-compliant programmes and timely programme reporting.
• Achievement of key project milestones and effective management of programme risk and change.
• Continuous improvement in planning standards, reporting quality, and project controls outputs.

Essential Skills and Experience
• Significant planning experience in infrastructure, major civil engineering, energy, utilities, highways, or rail projects.
• Strong working knowledge of Primavera P6 and planning software, with the ability to produce integrated programmes, impact programmes, and look-ahead schedules.
• Experience working in UK infrastructure environments under NEC contracts.
• Strong understanding of construction sequencing, project controls, production rates, and programme analysis.
• Ability to analyse complex data and provide clear strategic and operational insight.
• Strong leadership, communication, stakeholder management, and client-facing skills.
• Proven ability to manage multidisciplinary interfaces and support commercial, operational, and tender teams from bid stage through to project completion.
• Experience producing visual management reports using Power BI or similar tools is desirable.


Desirable Qualifications
• Degree or HND in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management, or a related discipline.
• Membership of a relevant professional body such as APM, ICE, CIOB, or PMI.
• Primavera P6 certification and NEC accreditation are desirable.
