The Opportunity

Are you looking for a career which is rewarding, at the cutting edge of project development and where you can really make a difference? Come and join our expanding Sizewell C (SZC) team and work on one of the most exciting and largest megaprojects in the UK, whilst being at the forefront of the UK’s climate change agenda and energy policy.

Following on from the success of the new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point C (HPC), the Sizewell C Project (SZC) in Suffolk is the UK’s next nuclear power new build project. The project has obtained planning approval and has started construction works. It has recently achieved Financial Investment Decision (FID) meaning that all the funding for the full lifespan of the project is now secured and in place guaranteeing the full delivery of this new nuclear power station. When completed, it will provide dependable electricity to 6 million homes for 60 years, which along with renewables, will support Britain to achieve Net Zero by 2050.

The Role

We’re looking for a visionary leader to take on a pivotal role within the Technical Directorate, reporting directly to the SZC Technical Director. As Head of the Joint Design Office (JDO), you’ll be at the forefront of shaping and leading the site-based engineering function that supports construction and commissioning at Sizewell C.

This is more than a management role — it’s an opportunity to build something from the ground up. You’ll establish and lead a high-performing, multi-disciplinary team drawn from the SZC Technical Directorate, our Responsible Design and our key supply chain partners. Together, you’ll deliver engineering excellence that meets the highest standards of safety, quality, timeliness, and cost-efficiency.

Your leadership will set the tone for the entire team. You’ll inspire others through your action, championing the project’s values and behaviours, and providing expert guidance to help your team achieve ambitious goals.

Skills

This strategic role will define and implement the JDO strategy and operating model for Sizewell C - establishing a site-based engineering function in collaboration with the Responsible Designer, other designers and supply chain partners to support construction and commissioning.

To be successful in this role you’ll demonstrate the following:

You’ll draw from your experience and lessons from HPC and other EPR projects, the strategy will reflect Sizewell C’s unique context, promoting efficient, digitally enabled ways of working.
Experience of building and leading high-performing technical teams with clear roles and responsibilities to ensure delivery of the JDO’s scope.
Working across delivery programmes and partners to proactively manage and resolve technical issues during construction and commissioning.
The Head of JDO will track progress against milestones, budgets and deadlines, providing regular updates to key stakeholders.
You’ll establish and uphold standards for nuclear safety case production and maintenance, aligned with regulatory and licensee expectations.
The role also includes defining technical strategies for design modifications and ensuring Intelligent Customer Capability for accepting externally delivered design and safety case work.
Proven ability to drive timely, safe and cost-effective delivery of design acceptance activities that meet all business and technical requirements.

If you thrive in a high-stakes environment and are ready to help deliver some of the most complex projects in the energy sector, we’d love to hear from you!

Why Join Us?

For more than 60 years, nuclear power stations in the UK have been quietly keeping Britain fuelled with massive amounts of home-grown energy.

Our teams up and down the country are proudly continuing to serve the nation – but they also have an eye on the future.

EDF is leading the UK's nuclear renaissance with the construction of a new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point C and plans for a new power station at Sizewell C in Suffolk.

Nuclear power is the most reliable, low-carbon energy source currently available to the UK. EDF is playing a key role in the development of nuclear sites, while Hinkley Point C will provide low-carbon electricity to meet 7% of the UK demand. The project is already making a positive impact on the local and national economy as well as boosting skills and education.

We’re not just building new nuclear power stations. We’re developing careers, upskilling generations and creating thousands of employment and apprenticeship opportunities across a variety of skills areas.

It takes a special kind of person to work in the nuclear energy industry and although we have thousands of them there’s always a need for more.

Our industry has a mind-boggling range of opportunities and more jobs, and in more places, than you might think. But it’s also an industry which is changing.

We’re a responsible business and proud to be Britain’s biggest generator of zero carbon electricity. With size, age and experience, we believe we can do even more.
