Opportunity for a Groundwork Ganger (Sizewell C) working with Ballycommon on the Sizewell C Project,


Main Duties:

 

  • Supervise Groundwork Operatives: Lead and manage a team of groundworkers on site, ensuring all tasks are carried out safely, efficiently, and in line with project specifications.
  • Deliver Hands-On Groundworks: Actively take part in groundworks activities including deep drainage, ducting, footings, foundations, kerbing, slabbing, concrete works, and reinstatement.
  • Interpret Drawings and Levels: Read and understand construction drawings, set out work, and ensure works are completed to the correct line, level, and specification.
  • Ensure Site Safety Compliance: Carry out daily briefings, toolbox talks, and site inductions as required. Enforce strict adherence to health & safety procedures and correct PPE usage.
  • Coordinate with Site Management: Communicate daily with site supervisors, engineers, and subcontractors to coordinate labour, plant, and materials, and address any on-site issues or changes.
  • Monitor Work Quality and Progress: Inspect completed works to ensure high standards are maintained and that tasks are progressing in line with the site programme.
  • Organise Plant and Materials: Ensure operatives have the correct plant, tools, and materials available. Report material requirements and manage deliveries.
  • Maintain Records: Complete daily site paperwork including site diaries, operative records, plant use, material usage, and progress reporting.
  • Support Problem Solving: Respond to technical or site issues quickly, proposing practical solutions and ensuring minimal disruption to site operations.
  • Promote a Productive Working Environment: Motivate operatives, maintain morale, and encourage a positive team culture to ensure productivity and quality outcomes.


Qualifications & Certifications (Groundwork Ganger)

 

  • CSCS Card
  • Minimum requirement: Blue Skilled Worker Card
  • Preferred: Gold Supervisory Card (for those with site management or team leadership responsibilities)
  • NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Construction Operations / Groundworks / General Construction
  • NVQ Level 3 recommended for those supervising others on site
  • SSSTS (Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme)
  • Required for most ganger or team leader roles
  • Ensures awareness of site safety, risk assessments, and legal responsibilities
  • CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) Test
  • Supervisory level test required for Gold CSCS
  • Must be completed within the last 2 years
  • Right to Work in the UK
  • Valid UK passport or birth certificate
  • Or share code for non-UK nationals: https://www.gov.uk/prove-right-to-work
  • Full UK Driving Licence (desirable but not essential)

  • Confined Space Entry (if applicable)

  • Temporary Works Awareness
  • CPCS or NPORS Plant Tickets (e.g. Dumper, Roller, 360 Excavator - if operating plant)
  • Proven experience leading teams of groundworkers on construction, civil engineering, or infrastructure projects, ensuring work is delivered safely, efficiently, and to specification.
  • Hands-on experience across all aspects of groundwork, including deep drainage, ducting, foundations, concreting, kerbing, edgings, slabbing, and reinstatement.
  • Strong background in reading and interpreting technical drawings, levels, and site plans, with the ability to set out small works and guide operatives accordingly.
  • Experience delivering works in high-pressure, live site environments such as highways, nuclear, utilities, or commercial developments, coordinating closely with engineers and site management.
  • Skilled in conducting daily briefings, toolbox talks, and ensuring operatives adhere to all site-specific health and safety protocols.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate labour, plant, and materials, resolving issues quickly and communicating effectively with supervisors, clients, and subcontractors.
  • Familiar with completing daily paperwork, including site diaries, progress reports, plant records, and safety observations.
  • Experience in mentoring and supervising operatives, promoting a strong team ethic, ensuring high-quality workmanship, and encouraging development.
  • Capable of problem-solving on the ground, adapting plans as needed due to unforeseen ground conditions, service clashes, or access issues.
  • Previous work on major sites or frameworks such as Sizewell C, HS2, large-scale housing developments, local authority highways, or MOD sites is highly beneficial.
