Environment and Sustainability Manager (Sizewell C)

Main Duties:


Provide clear, consistent leadership to direct reports and Tier 1 suppliers, promoting a high-performance environmental and sustainability culture.
Establish, maintain, and oversee compliance arrangements aligned with all environmental commitments, permits, consents, and licences.
Manage, coordinate, and monitor environmental and sustainability activities across site operations to maintain compliance with agreed standards and expectations.
Champion world-class environmental behaviours across site teams and the wider supply chain, including the provision of strategic environmental leadership.
Ensure that significant environmental aspects associated with the project are identified, controlled, and effectively mitigated.
Drive environmental and sustainability performance across the project and work collaboratively with Tier 1 contractors to embed best practice.
Work with the client team to support engagement with environmental regulators, including the Environment Agency.
Provide a highly professional, client-focused service across all environmental and regulatory interfaces.
Maintain compliance with ISO 14001:2015, ensuring environmental management systems support policy commitments, objectives, and continuous improvement.
Maintain oversight of the programme of environmental inspections, surveillance, and performance monitoring.
Develop, implement, and report on environmental performance indicators (KPIs) to support continuous improvement.
Lead or support event and incident investigations, identifying learning and recommending actions to enhance performance.
Review and optimise environmental department resources, processes, and activities to support project objectives.
Ensure team members are assessed, appraised, trained, and developed in line with project requirements.
Manage environmental functions to agreed quality standards, ensuring alignment with the project's Quality Manual and wider quality improvement initiatives.
Build strong working relationships with internal teams, contractors, the internal regulator, and external regulatory bodies.
Promote construction experience feedback and embed learning to enhance environmental and sustainability performance.
Line management responsibility for 4 direct reports (total team of approximately 10).
Required to influence environmental performance across the wider project supply chain.
Responsibilities span pre-construction, construction delivery, and commissioning.
Supporting numerous multidisciplinary delivery teams and several Tier 1 contractors, with a combined workforce peak of approximately 8,000 personnel.
Management of the environmental monitoring budget.
Accountable to the Head of Site Compliance.


Requirements:


Degree-level qualification in an environmental or related discipline.
Background in a technical or engineering discipline is advantageous.
Demonstrable leadership experience is essential.
Extensive experience managing environmental issues on major infrastructure or engineering projects, working both from a client and principal contractor perspective.
Proven stakeholder management, including building strong relationships with regulators and other public bodies.
Experience delivering regulatory commitments is highly advantageous.
Experience within a highly regulated industry is desirable.
Demonstrable experience embedding and managing regulatory and environmental management arrangements.
Extensive experience leading Environmental & Sustainability teams on large, complex, and highly regulated construction projects.
Broad construction field knowledge, ideally covering the full lifecycle-from civils through mechanical, electrical, installation, and commissioning.
Demonstrable leadership, influencing capability, and the ability to challenge and assure performance effectively.
Detailed understanding of compliance requirements related to environmental permits, licences, and consents.
Strong understanding of sustainability expectations, opportunities, and constraints on major infrastructure projects.
Experience driving sustainability initiatives within a large project environment (desirable).
Strong appreciation of construction, installation, and commissioning challenges associated with complex engineering works.
High levels of accuracy, attention to detail, resilience, and results-focused delivery.
Strong organisational skills, with the ability to work independently and proactively.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills across all organisational levels and external stakeholders.
Ability to maintain confidentiality when dealing with sensitive information.
