The Sizewell C (SZC) project requires a Design Lead to take a role in the Civil Works Alliance (CWA), Marine and Tunnelling Portion, Engineering and Technical Team, ensuring technical delivery of complex designs across these interfaces. 


The role requires management of external consultants and working with design managers, methods teams and multi-disciplinary leads to ensure clear understanding of design objectives, inputs and assumptions for significant elements of permanent works and associated major temporary works including Offshore Tunnels; 


Permanent Shafts and Tunnel Shaft Connections; Heads; Onshore Tunnels; and Fish Return Tunnels. The project team includes people internal to the CWA, lead design consultant(s), sub-consultants, internal and external temporary work designer(s), and subcontractors


Main Duties:

 

  • Identification and negotiation of design scope, programme and organisation to support procurement and appointment of external consultant(s);
  • Management of Design Managers and working with multi-disciplinary leads including methods, temporary works, materials, geotechnical and digital;
  • Review Technical Specifications and ensure design compliance and supports practical construction
  • Manage all technical Queries or Requests for Information for timely issue and response;
  • Implement Technical Change as required;
  • Produce Design Briefs to meet design requirements in support of Designer Services procurement;
  • Implement Designer competency assessments;
  • Obtain & manage risk in accordance with the CDM regulations;
  • Produce a Design Management Plan in support of the Consultants;
  • Ensure provision of an agreed design delivery programme that meets with construction needs;
  • Maintain, manage and update the Design Submissions & Approvals register;
  • Support and potentially manage 3rd party consents to meet contract requirements, maintaining the Consents Register;
  • Implement Design Start Up meetings with each design consultant;
  • Chair and manage regular Design Review meetings with Designer and Client;
  • Maintain a robust document control of all technical documentation and information;
  • Ensure the designs have been subject to Independent Design Review;
  • Ensure that designs have been subject to Inter-Disciplinary Checking;
  • Ensure that the design created suits the methodology adopted for construction;
  • Ensure involvement of stakeholders and construction input during design review meetings;
  • Manage the appropriate action and response to any reviewer comments;
  • Gain full approval of the designs from all approving authorities;
  • Coordinate with Temporary Works Design Manager to ensure all temporary works design interfaces are managed;
  • Supported by Design Interface Manager to ensure design interfaces are identified, coordinated with construction teams and managed;
  • Before construction commencement to ensure that design documentation has been approved;
  • Implement a design hand over to the construction team;
  • Ensure a relentless focus on Zero Harm;
  • Support paperless definition and development. Working closely with the BIM Manager and construction teams to produce modelling requirements/specification and inform Detailers when developing design models;
  • Support development and implementation of CWA Common Data Environment (CDE) and proactively enable delivery teams to work in a co-ordinated way aligned with CDE requirements, including key supply chain;
  • Support definition and implement/coordinate with Task Information Delivery Plans (TIDPs);
  • Ensure clear communication of process and information management requirements to ensure information produced by various stakeholders on the project supports overall goals of the M&T Portion


Qualifications : 

 

  • Proven experience in delivering technically complex designs in a contractor led environment, including management of multiple external consultants;
  • Experience of successfully implementing design strategies and experience of large complex Major Projects is required;
  • Leadership skills in a matrix organisation are required to deliver design services in a timely manner;
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills are required, coupled with an ability to form effective relationships with partners under time pressure;
  • Will know 'what good looks like' for production of design deliverables with a focus on quality and communication of construction requirements and risk;
  • Have experience of change management;
  • Knowledge of codes of practice and other regulatory material, applicable to design and construction of tunnels and RC structures (essential);
  • The individual should be able to motivate both internal and external teams and nurture / mentor / coach less experienced team members.
  • Minimum 10 years demonstrable and relevant experience. 
  • Professional membership with the ICE or equivalent is a requirement. 
  • Good working knowledge of BIM is required. The individual will have experience within the most current forms of procurement. 
  • Excellent IT Skills including Autocad (desirable) and Microsoft Office (essential)
