Opportunity for a Steelfixer working with Kilnbridge on the Hinkley Point C Project,
Main Duties:
Reading and Interpreting Drawings
• Understand and follow engineering drawings, bar bending schedules (BBS), and technical specs.
• Determine the size, quantity, and placement of rebar or mesh for each project.
Preparing Materials
• Select and cut steel bars or mesh to the required lengths and shapes.
• Use tools such as rebar cutters, benders, and hydraulic shears.
Installing Reinforcement
• Accurately position and fix rebar or mesh into place within shuttering/formwork.
• Secure rebar using tie wire, clips, or welding (where specified).
• Install spacers, chairs, and stirrups to ensure proper concrete cover and spacing.
Formwork Coordination
• Work closely with shuttering carpenters and concrete gangs to align reinforcement with formwork requirements.
• Make adjustments on site based on actual formwork or site conditions.
Compliance and Safety
• Follow health and safety regulations, especially around manual handling, working at height, and site-specific rules.
• Ensure that reinforcement is installed to industry standards and tolerances (e.g. BS 8666 and BS 7973).
Quality Control
• Double-check bar sizes, spacing, and alignment before concrete is poured.
• Report any discrepancies or changes to site supervisors or engineers.
Qualifications/Experience:
NVQ Level 2 in Steel Fixing
CSCS Blue Skilled Worker - Steel Fixing
Solid experience installing steel reinforcement for:
• Foundations
• Columns and beams
• Slabs and walls
• Precast or in-situ concrete structures
• Familiarity with various tying methods (e.g. using nips, twisting wire, mechanical tying tools).
• Working on different types of construction projects (commercial, civil, infrastructure, or energy).
Reading Technical Drawings
• Must be able to read and interpret engineering drawings and bar bending schedules (BBS) accurately.
• Experience identifying bar marks, shapes, spacing, lap lengths, and cover requirements.
Precision and Quality Control
• Proven ability to:
• Place and secure reinforcement to exact specs and tolerances.
• Use spacers and supports to maintain proper placement.
• Inspect and correct errors before concrete pouring.
Health & Safety Awareness
• Site experience following construction safety standards, especially around:
• Manual handling of heavy steel
• Working at height or near formwork
• Confined spaces (e.g. shafts, tanks)
• Basic understanding of risk assessments, PPE, and safe work practices.
Teamwork & Site Integration
• Experience working alongside shuttering carpenters, concrete operatives, and site
