The Opportunity

As a Pre-Operations Senior Radiological Protection Engineer, you’ll provide first-line leadership in developing operational radiological protection capability and supporting the transition to operational arrangements at HPC. You’ll ensure legal requirements and company policies are met, while striving to implement world-class best practices through industry benchmarking, all in support of the Pre-Operations Radiological Protection Lead.

No matter where you are, our priority is to make sure you feel safe, valued, and celebrated.

Here, we do right by each other and everyone’s welcome. We’re on an action-oriented journey, championing equity, diversity, and inclusion. We’d like our future workforce to have an equal gender balance, represent a broad mix of people from minority ethnic backgrounds, LGBTQ+, those with a disability and supporting social mobility.

We’re a disability confident employer and we’ll do all we can to help with your application. Please let us know if you need to request reasonable adjustments.

We take pride in fostering a dynamic and inclusive environment, where the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our employees drive fresh thinking and innovation. We understand that success means different things to different people. We believe there are multiple definitions of what it means to succeed. That’s why we support you to pursue a career that’s unique to you. Because success is personal.

What you’ll be doing

In this role, you’ll support the Pre-Operations Radiological Protection Lead by developing and delivering radiological protection programmes that meet legal, quality, and schedule requirements. A key part of your responsibilities involves shaping and implementing procedures for the operational phase of the HPC Nuclear Power Plant, ensuring alignment with regulatory and organisational standards. You’ll also act as a key interface with regulators and industry bodies, while providing specialist advice as needed.

Leading radiological protection activities across construction, commissioning, and operations phases, you’ll ensure all work involving ionising radiation is performed safely, efficiently, and compliantly. This includes supervising fieldwork, promoting a strong radiological safety culture, and preparing your team to provide hands-on technical support. In addition, you’ll oversee the specification, procurement, and commissioning of essential radiological protection equipment and facilities to meet UK legislative requirements and best practices.

To support the development of a high-performing team, you'll mentor junior and graduate engineers and contribute to training programmes that ensure ongoing legal and operational compliance. Drawing on industry-wide learning and best practice, you’ll help shape a resilient and capable radiological protection function ready for long-term operations.

Who you are

You’ll bring strong technical knowledge in radiological protection, ideally backed by a science-related degree or equivalent. You’ll have hands-on experience applying the Ionising Radiations Regulations and other relevant legislation, as well as managing radiological protection equipment and service providers in fast-paced environments. Previous leadership of multidisciplinary teams in regulated settings is essential, along with a proven ability to motivate and guide teams to deliver high-quality work on time and within budget.

You’ll be confident in providing practical radiological protection advice and capable of developing clear, compliant procedures and documentation. Strong stakeholder engagement is a key part of the role, so experience working with diverse teams and resolving issues in multicultural environments is important. You’ll also need to demonstrate the ability to influence and negotiate effectively across technical and non-technical areas.

We’re looking for someone who has worked closely with regulators and has a good understanding of radiological safety within nuclear-licensed sites. Chartered status and prior appointments such as Radiation Protection Adviser or Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser would be advantageous. Experience in mentoring, coaching, and developing junior team members, along with a solid grasp of nuclear industry quality assurance standards, would help you thrive in this role.

If this sounds like you then we’d love to hear from you!

Additionally, you must meet the criteria for Security Vetting, which generally requires you to have been a UK resident for at least 3 of the last 5 years.

Why Join Us?

For more than 60 years, nuclear power stations in the UK have been quietly keeping Britain fuelled with massive amounts of home-grown energy.

Our teams up and down the country are proudly continuing to serve the nation – but they also have an eye on the future.

EDF is leading the UK's nuclear renaissance with the construction of a new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point C and plans for a new power station at Sizewell C in Suffolk.

Nuclear power is the most reliable, low-carbon energy source currently available to the UK. EDF is playing a key role in the development of nuclear sites, while Hinkley Point C will provide low-carbon electricity to meet 7% of the UK demand. The project is already making a positive impact on the local and national economy as well as boosting skills and education.

We’re not just building new nuclear power stations. We’re developing careers, upskilling generations and creating thousands of employment and apprenticeship opportunities across a variety of skills areas.

It takes a special kind of person to work in the nuclear energy industry and although we have thousands of them there’s always a need for more.

Our industry has a mind-boggling range of opportunities and more jobs, and in more places, than you might think. But it’s also an industry which is changing.

We’re a responsible business and proud to be Britain’s biggest generator of zero carbon electricity. With size, age and experience, we believe we can do even more.
