What you’ll be doing

As a Reactor Operator at Hinkley Point C, once operational, you will be part of a 24/7 shift team in the Main Control Room. Your primary responsibility will be ensuring the efficient, safe, and reliable operation of the nuclear power plant, maintaining high performance and safety standards at all times. You will begin with a comprehensive training programme lasting 18 to 24 months, which includes classroom learning, simulator training, self-study, and hands-on, on-the-job experience.

Following your training, during the commissioning phase, you will support activities as the end user, facilitating a smooth transition from construction to operational readiness. Your role will also include developing and implementing operational documentation to ensure clear guidelines for plant operations. Additionally, you will contribute to the improvement of training programmes for future Operations colleagues and have the opportunity for secondments to other areas of the project to broaden your understanding.

Once the plant is operational, you will take on responsibilities such as providing operational leadership, monitoring equipment and system performance, and controlling plant evolutions with precision. You will ensure all operations follow procedures with a safety-conscious approach while working collaboratively with your team. A solid understanding of plant design, system interactions, and engineering principles will be essential, and you will actively support the Work Planning organisation to maintain an operationally focused schedule.

Who you are

We welcome applications from individuals who possess at least a relevant Higher National Certificate (HNC) or equivalent qualification. Please specify the equivalency of your qualification in your application. While a degree in Engineering, Science, Mathematics, or a related field is desirable, we strongly value diverse qualifications and experiences.

We are seeking individuals who possess the following skills and attributes:

A strong commitment to safety, ensuring the well-being of both you and your team in all aspects of work. You should have the ability to communicate clearly and collaborate effectively with colleagues, fostering a supportive and efficient work environment.

You will be able to maintain a calm and professional demeanour, even in challenging situations, and demonstrate strong technical knowledge. You will be able to make well-informed decisions based on available data and contribute to innovative solutions through continuous learning and improvement.

Additionally, we value individuals who are open to professionally challenging others and accepting constructive feedback as a means of growth. A willingness to undergo Counter Terrorist Check (CTC) vetting upon joining is also required.

Proficiency in English is essential to ensure clear communication, especially in a safety-critical environment.

When can you start?

These positions will be starting the 1st September 2025. The selection process will consist of an assessment centre and then, if successful a simulator assessment – dates to be confirmed.

If this sounds like you then we’d love to hear from you!

For this role you must have evidence of right to work in the UK. As a project, we do not discriminate on the grounds of age, gender, race, colour, religion, disability or sexual orientation, and we welcome applications from all sections of the community.

Why Join Us?

For more than 60 years, nuclear power stations in the UK have been quietly keeping Britain fuelled with massive amounts of home-grown energy.

Our teams up and down the country are proudly continuing to serve the nation – but they also have an eye on the future.

EDF is leading the UK's nuclear renaissance with the construction of a new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point C and plans for a new power station at Sizewell C in Suffolk.

Nuclear power is the most reliable, low-carbon energy source currently available to the UK. EDF is playing a key role in the development of nuclear sites, while Hinkley Point C will provide low-carbon electricity to meet 7% of the UK demand. The project is already making a positive impact on the local and national economy as well as boosting skills and education.

We’re not just building new nuclear power stations. We’re developing careers, upskilling generations and creating thousands of employment and apprenticeship opportunities across a variety of skills areas.

It takes a special kind of person to work in the nuclear energy industry and although we have thousands of them there’s always a need for more.

Our industry has a mind-boggling range of opportunities and more jobs, and in more places, than you might think. But it’s also an industry which is changing.

We’re a responsible business and proud to be Britain’s biggest generator of zero carbon electricity. With size, age and experience, we believe we can do even more.
