Planning Manager - Nuclear
Dalkia
Hinkley Point C

Role Characteristics:

Hinkley Point C is the UK’s first new build nuclear power station in a generation that is critical to the UK NetZero targets.
All roles on the project require key behaviours which support the Zero Harm objective, a questioning attitude, and drive to uphold the standards of safety and quality required by this prestigious project. A committed strong work ethic is essential at all levels.

All candidates are expected to demonstrate their knowledge and experience where possible directly related to the criteria required for the role. It is acknowledged that previous Nuclear based experience will not always be possible, as such supporting with project research and how individual skills may be transferable will be important.

There are opportunities to put together strategic people plans within the nuclear sector, work on wider company people projects, deliver an excellent first-class service to employees and ensure the administration and processes that engulf working life are implemented effectively and fairly
Summary of Role    The Planning Manager will take a hands-on lead in developing, maintaining and analysing project schedules to support successful delivery. Working closely with delivery teams, subcontractors and stakeholders, the role will own the planning process, actively build and update programmes, challenge progress, maintain robust schedule logic, identify risks and dependencies, and provide reliable forecasts to inform decisions.

The role combines practical planning delivery with leadership, setting clear standards, coordinating planning inputs and supporting the development of planners while ensuring integration with the wider programme. Nuclear experience is not essential; strong planning fundamentals, practical scheduling capability and the ability to learn new systems are more important. MEP experience is desirable.

Key responsibilities:

•    Lead the planning function for assigned projects, taking a hands-on role in developing, maintaining and updating detailed schedules against agreed milestones and programme requirements.
•    Manage and coordinate planners’ workloads, priorities and outputs, ensuring planning information is accurate, consistent and delivered on time.
•    Set and maintain planning standards, reviewing schedule quality, logic, coding, constraints, calendars and key dependencies.
•    Lead progress reviews with delivery teams and subcontractors, gathering, validating and challenging progress and forecast information.
•    Undertake Critical Path Analysis and oversee the identification, assessment and escalation of schedule risks, constraints and potential delays.
•    Own programme forecasts, look-ahead and performance reporting, providing clear recommendations to project leadership.
•    Challenge sequencing, durations, productivity assumptions and forecast dates to maintain realistic and achievable programmes.
•    Lead mitigation and recovery planning with delivery teams, agreeing actions, owners and timescales and monitoring their effectiveness.
•    Manage planning interfaces and dependencies across disciplines, subcontractors, work packages and the wider programme.
•    Oversee baseline management and change control, incorporating approved changes and maintaining accurate, traceable schedule records.
•    Coordinate resource planning, support 4D planning and ensure project schedules integrate with the wider programme.
•    Lead the preparation of programme submissions and supporting information for NEC programme acceptance, early warnings and compensation events, working closely with project and commercial teams.
•    Present programme performance at project and management reviews, clearly communicating key issues, decisions required and delivery priorities.
•    Coach and develop planners, providing practical guidance, reviewing outputs and addressing capability or performance gaps.
•    Build effective relationships with delivery teams, subcontractors and stakeholders, promoting shared ownership of the programme and accountability for planning inputs.

Essential Qualifications and Experience:

•    Substantial practical experience in planning and scheduling within construction, engineering, infrastructure or a similar project-delivery environment, operating at Senior Planner level or above.
•    Strong hands-on experience using recognised planning and scheduling software.
•    A sound understanding of schedule development, logic, progress measurement, Critical Path Analysis, forecasting, baseline management and change control.
•    Experience taking ownership of project programmes, coordinating planning inputs and delivering accurate forecasts and reports.
•    Experience working directly with delivery teams and subcontractors to validate progress, challenge assumptions and develop realistic delivery sequences.
•    Ability to identify schedule risks, constraints and dependencies, and work with project teams to develop mitigation and recovery plans.
•    Evidence of supporting or mentoring other planners, reviewing planning outputs or coordinating workloads. Previous formal line-management experience is not essential.
•    Strong stakeholder-management and communication skills, with the confidence to lead planning discussions, challenge information constructively and present recommendations to project leadership.
•    Good organisational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to prioritise competing demands and meet programme submission and reporting deadlines.
•    Ability to work collaboratively across project disciplines and contribute to wider programme integration and consistent planning standards.
•    Ready to progress into a first planning-management role while retaining direct responsibility for practical planning delivery.
•    Knowledge of NEC contracts, including accepted programmes, early warnings and compensation events.

Desirable qualifications and Experience:

•    Experience working within the Mechanical, Electrical, Piping and Plumbing (MEP) sector.
•    Experience using Primavera P6 to develop, maintain or analyse project schedules. This is beneficial but not essential.
•    Familiarity with 4D planning tools, particularly Synchro, and their use in visual sequencing and construction methodology reviews.
•    A recognised professional qualification or progress toward membership with an organisation such as APM, PMI, CIOB or an equivalent industry body.
•    Experience working on large, complex or multidisciplinary construction or infrastructure projects.
•    Previous experience within the nuclear sector or another highly regulated environment. This is beneficial but not essential.
•    Awareness of Earned Value Management and other project performance-measurement techniques.
•    Experience supporting resource planning, schedule-risk analysis, mitigation or recovery planning.
•    Good Microsoft Excel skills, including formulas, pivot tables and data analysis for programme and performance reporting.
•    Experience using Power BI or similar business-intelligence tools to support reports, dashboards and visualisation of project performance.
•    Experience integrating information from multiple systems or data sources to support project and programme reporting.

Why Join Us?

For more than 60 years, nuclear power stations in the UK have been quietly keeping Britain fuelled with massive amounts of home-grown energy.

Our teams up and down the country are proudly continuing to serve the nation – but they also have an eye on the future.

EDF is leading the UK's nuclear renaissance with the construction of a new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point C and plans for a new power station at Sizewell C in Suffolk.

Nuclear power is the most reliable, low-carbon energy source currently available to the UK. EDF is playing a key role in the development of nuclear sites, while Hinkley Point C will provide low-carbon electricity to meet 7% of the UK demand. The project is already making a positive impact on the local and national economy as well as boosting skills and education.

We’re not just building new nuclear power stations. We’re developing careers, upskilling generations and creating thousands of employment and apprenticeship opportunities across a variety of skills areas.

It takes a special kind of person to work in the nuclear energy industry and although we have thousands of them there’s always a need for more.

Our industry has a mind-boggling range of opportunities and more jobs, and in more places, than you might think. But it’s also an industry which is changing.

We’re a responsible business and proud to be Britain’s biggest generator of zero carbon electricity. With size, age and experience, we believe we can do even more.
