Opportunity…
The Operational Development Engineer is responsible for supporting the Maintenance Leads with the delivery of the Comm-Ops Maintenance programme, ensuring that our plant is fit for its operational life and using your technical expertise to support the wider organisation. You will perform governance and oversight of our contractors ensuring that assets meet their operational safety & performance requirements.
You will be responsible for helping to shape the next generation of Nuclear Power Stations in the UK, developing and implementing maintenance arrangements required for a safe and reliable plant. You will also provide technical oversight during construction of HPC, building up knowledge of Nuclear and Conventional systems in preparation for the handover of equipment from Commissioning. This is in preparation for the starting-up of Hinkley Point C (HPC) power station and the subsequent day-to-day technical management for 60-years of commercial operation.

What you’ll be doing…
As the Operational Development Engineer, you will be a skilled and motivated Technical Engineer to provide expertise and leadership in supporting the operation and maintenance of critical assets. This role offers the opportunity to play a key part in a world-class nuclear project, ensuring safety, reliability, and operational excellence.
You will oversee engineering activities during the pre- and post-handover stages of assets from commissioning. You will chair meetings, review technical documentation, and assess contractor compliance with care and maintenance protocols. When plant issues arise, you will troubleshoot problems using your technical expertise. Ensuring effective corrective actions are implemented to resolve issues and prevent recurrence, maintaining high standards of reliability.
Ability to contribute to the development of standards, procedures, and practices that support safe and efficient plant operations. Research industry best practices and champion their application to achieve world-class performance. This role requires effective time management and flexibility. You will work within your area of expertise while pursuing opportunities for training and development to meet evolving business needs.
Have a strong engineering background, exceptional problem-solving skills, and a proactive mindset. Experience in the nuclear or energy sector is highly desirable.
Who you are…
- You’ll have an HNC/Degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate engineering discipline, demonstrating a strong technical foundation.
- Have proven experience in developing and reviewing technical documentation. A proactive and analytical mindset is essential, with the ability to work independently and take the initiative when needed.
- A solid understanding of quality standards and requirements within the UK nuclear regulatory framework—or a similarly regulated environment—is highly desirable. Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills are crucial for effective collaboration and stakeholder engagement.
- Strong organisational abilities and IT proficiency are key requirements, as well as a demonstrated commercial awareness and business acumen. Familiarity with maintenance practices applied in large engineering organisations, particularly within mechanical or electrical engineering disciplines, is also important.
- Additionally, previous experience using an Asset Management tool will be highly advantageous.
