Groundworker


Location: Hinkley Point C

Reports To: Site Supervisor / Section Foreman


Job Summary:


We are seeking a skilled and reliable Groundworker to join our construction team. The Groundworker will be responsible for preparing and maintaining construction sites, including excavation, laying foundations, and installing drainage systems. The ideal candidate will have experience in construction, strong practical skills, and a commitment to safety.


Pay:

 

  • Up to £20.05 per hour (Overtime paid at £40.10 per hour)
  • 19% shift uplift, earning up to £401 per day
  • Shift Pattern: 12:00 PM – 10:30 PM, 10 days on / 4 days off
  • Bonus: Up to 10% of total earnings after the qualifying period
  • Daily Accommodation allowance, daily travel paid to site, monthly travel home paid


Key Responsibilities:


Site Preparation:

 

  • Mark and measure areas according to project plans.
  • Set up site boundaries with temporary fencing and safety barriers as per approved traffic management plan.


Excavation and Groundwork:

 

  • Perform excavation and grading using hand tools to approved levels.
  • Prepare the ground for construction by levelling and compacting soil.
  • Safely remove and dispose of excavated materials.


Foundation and Structural Work:

 

  • Lay and compact sub-base materials.
  • Assist in the installation of foundations, including pouring and levelling concrete to the standard required on a nuclear project.
  • Set up and remove formwork for concrete foundations and structures.


Drainage and Utility Installation:

 

  • Install drainage systems, including pipes and stormwater management. Up to and including 1200 Dia pipes.
  • Lay ducts for utilities such as electricity, gas, and water.
  • Connect drainage systems to main sewer and water lines.
  • Conduct testing to services as required by quality systems.
  • Lay kerbs and drainage products to approved line and level.

 

Health and Safety Compliance:

 

  • Follow all health and safety regulations on-site.
  • Always use personal protective equipment (PPE).as instructed. 
  • Report any hazards or unsafe conditions to the supervisor.


General Site Maintenance:

 

  • Keep the worksite clean and organized.
  • Perform routine maintenance on tools and equipment.
  • Support other trades on-site as needed to ensure project continuity.


Essential Requirements:


Experience:

 

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Groundworker or in a similar role.
  • Proven experience with excavations, concrete work, and drainage installation.


Skills:

 

  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and site plans.
  • Proficiency with hand tools and construction machinery.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Physical fitness and the ability to work in all weather conditions.


Certifications:

 

  • Valid CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card for role.
  • Certification for operating plant (e.g., CPCS,) is preferred.
  • Health and Safety training (e.g., First Aid, Manual Handling, deep excavation training) is a plus.
  • NVQ Level 2 General Operative
  • HS&E test for Operatives OR CCNSG Safety Passport


Desirable Attributes:

 

  • Team player with strong communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Flexibility to work overtime and weekends when required.


Working Conditions:

 

  • The role involves working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Manual labour is required, including lifting, digging, and operating machinery.
  • The job may involve early starts, overtime, and occasional weekend work.
