BYLOR is a joint venture between Bouygues TP, a worldwide construction organisation with considerable experience in the nuclear sector, and Laing O'Rourke, the UK's largest privately-owned engineering and construction contractor.

Together we hold one of the largest contracts to build the new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point C in Somerset.

You will be part of the delivery team on building Europe's largest construction project and working on the first new nuclear power station to be built in the UK for over 30 years.

Your input, expertise and passion will enable us to complete the project safely, to the required level of quality, on time and on budget.

Formwork is internationally recognised as an innovative technique that is used to form concrete structures across the entire infrastructure. Formwork Carpenters contribute to the construction of projects through the preparation, installation and quality management of all stages of the formwork and falsework process  Preparing falsework that provides temporary support structures for forms and undertake formwork. This includes producing panels and fittings that mould to form a desired shape with concrete, such as slabs, support beams, columns and walls, Formworkers are involved in the entire envelope of the construction industry. A formwork carpenter is skilled in the precise measuring, cutting and shaping of wood or metal and also works closely with workforce fixing steel and pouring concrete.

Weekly wages range from £250 - £640 per week 

Wages depend on age at start of apprenticeship, the figures above show the weekly wage range reflecting rates for different ages and working hours between 39 & 48 hours per week. Other travel & accommodation allowances are accessible whilst on site, dependent on individual circumstances. These are applied on top of the above figures.

The Formwork Carpenter Apprenticeship is for anyone aged 18 or above who is looking for a career in Formwork Shuttering. You will have the opportunity to learn from the best instructors/mentors who have many years of experience. You will be employed by Bylor and working at Hinkley Point C. The work is predominantly outdoors, and you will be required to work closely with the Formwork Team, Steel Fixers, Engineers and other teams across site.  

Form and assemble horizontal and vertical formwork and its components for a range of application including wall, slabs/bases, columns, beams and precast units to support concrete.  
Competent to safely use, store and maintain hand tools, power tools and ancillary equipment.
Demonstrate knowledge of planning and able to undertake different methods of construction used to build structures productively. Competent to read, interpret and apply information from drawings, specifications and construction information.
Takes ownership of allocated projects and effectively manage your own time.
Communicate in a clear and appropriate manner.
Apply general workplace health, safety and welfare requirements when undertaking construction formwork, falsework activities.
Practice safe working techniques for moving, lifting and handling traditional and proprietary formwork system, which will include working at heights and using access equipment.
Your working environment may be at height, noisy, dirty, physically demanding, outdoors in all weathers and cramped.
You will need to wear safety clothing and use safety equipment and adhere to the HPC values.
You will need to complete your apprentice college work alongside working on site which may mean that your assignments will need to be completed in the evenings and

Candidates will be expected to work outdoors in all weather conditions; a suitable level of fitness is required to carry out the programme tasks. You will need a good eye for detail and the ability to follow engineering instructions and technical charts and diagrams. Good maths skills are necessary to work out and follow precise measurements. Formwork Carpenters jobs are physically demanding, involving heavy lifting, bending and working at heights, noisy, dirty and demanding.

You will need to wear safety clothing and use safety equipment and adhere to the HPC values. Candidates may be expected to travel to sites and/or stay away from home for work or college attendance. 

Flexibility is required as we are currently operating shift patterns which include weekends, evenings and nights, overtime may also be required. Regular worked site hours are 48 per week, subject to change.

Qualifications Required GCSEs' Grades 4-9, A - C in Maths and English or equivalent.
* Aged 18 or above 
* Full independent mobility to enable travel to College.

You will also need to meet the following criteria [all potential offers are subject to meeting these criteria*]:

* Eligibility without restrictions to work in the UK with a valid work permit if applicable.
* Be able to be vetted to Nuclear Security Standards. This means having a valid UK/EEU passport. Full A4 Birth Certificate with parental birth certificate if needed. Proof of Address, proof of National Insurance and be able to demonstrate a 3-year work or education history and provide a personal reference.
