As an Environment & Sustainability Advisor, you will play a pivotal role in shaping Turnbull's infrastructure and development programmes. We are looking for someone who can confidently champion our sustainability ambitions, communicate clearly, and influence positive environmental outcomes at every stage of a project.

 

You'll bring a collaborative, solutions‑focused mindset, together with the confidence to negotiate, and advocate for environmentally responsible design. This role is fundamentally about embedding sustainability into decision‑making, driving high-quality outcomes, and ensuring our projects meet – and wherever possible exceed – environmental and planning requirements.

 

What you'll do

 

You will be responsible for:

  • Conducting regular site environmental inspections and audits, including subcontractor activities.
  • Providing guidance on incidents and supporting with mitigation measures to deliver continuous improvement.
  • Ensuring compliance with construction environmental controls, method statements and pollution prevention plans.
  • Championing positive environmental behaviours and supporting in the delivery of training and briefings.
  • Collaborating with operational teams to manage environmental permits, licences and obligations applicable to the project.
  • Representing Turnbull at meetings with stakeholders, regulators, and community groups, and preparing monthly reports, dashboards or client submissions.
  • Providing early and ongoing input to design and construction teams to maximise sustainable outcomes.
  • Preparing or reviewing Construction Environmental Management Plans (CEMPs) and Site Waste Management Plans (WMPs).
  • Embedding sustainability principles into project delivery, including resource efficiency, carbon reduction, biodiversity enhancement, and climate resilience.

 

What you'll need

  • Strong working knowledge of environmental regulation, planning processes, EIA, and sustainability assessment frameworks.
  • Experience influencing sustainable design within construction or infrastructure projects.
  • Excellent report writing, presentation, and communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex environmental issues.
  • Experience coordinating multi‑disciplinary work involving a range of environmental and sustainability specialisms (e.g., water management,  ecology, waste, carbon emissions, COSHH).
  • Experience working with planning authorities, regulators, and stakeholders.
  • Understanding of construction environmental control methods, pollution prevention, and environmental risk management.
  • Experience in sectors such as water, energy, rail, or highways is welcome.Strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise work across multiple projects.
  • A relevant environmental or sustainability degree, with membership (or working toward membership) of an appropriate professional body.
  • Good IT skills.
  • A full UK driving licence (and access to a vehicle for work).
 
It is desirable that you also have:
  • An understanding of water and wastewater treatment processes.
  • Basic GIS capability.
  • Awareness of environmental management systems such as ISO 14001.
  • Experience applying carbon accounting, biodiversity net gain, or circular economy principles.
