Job title: Design Manager
Reporting to: Design team Leader



  • 5 years experiences.
  • Steel structure sector experience.
  • Design consultant management.
  • Experience in managing design from concept to handover.
  • NEC experience.


Design Management

  • Able to understand technical requirements for steelworks, able to identify gaps in the requirements and to promote technical conversation to fill those gaps.
  • Familiar with EN and BS for steelworks.
  • Able to identify critical design interfaces.
  • Integrates design with manufacturing and construction methodology as well as procurement strategy.
  • Able to engages the team to create and evaluate multiple options for solutions.
  • Assesses the impact of options on the business case to create an overall better return for clients.
  • Embeds and integrates sustainability and safety in complex design issues.
  • Knows the causes of design interface problems and develops mechanisms to minimise these.
  • Coordinates project designs.
  • Implements procedures to ensure appropriate control is maintained on Professional Services Contract (PSC) compensation event process.
  • Identifies the design and construction risks and opportunities and is able implement strategies for risk/ opportunity analysis, value engineering, whole life costing and risk mitigation techniques.

Managing Consultancies:

  • Able to create an effective delivery environment, scoping, coordinating and managing consultant.
  • Establishes clear performance expectations and briefs in complex environments and then manages delivery against these.
  • Assesses and audits design consultants capability against project requirement, perform report and KPI tracker.
  • Able to articulate the contractual liabilities for project design and understand effects on project of late delivery of design.
  • Ensures appropriate scope for build ability and value engineering is incorporated into design process and design fee agreements.
  • Challenges concept designs.
  • Able to analyse the causes of design problems and develops mechanisms to minimise these.
  • Manages the consultant teams to deliver optimal solutions that can be appraised objectively and commercially.
  • Assesses design deliverable resource requirements and measures output in terms of productivity and time.
  • Ensures a coordinated and effective design is delivered to time and cost enabling profitability of the manufacturing and assembly business units.

Change Control:

Information management in design:


  • Develops and implements an effective information management strategy and system ranging from use and exploitation of Building Information Modelling (BIM) in work winning, to Operations and Maintenance (O&M).
  • Ensures effective design information is available and coordinated for all team members for the delivery of the works.
  • Uses information management as a differentiator in the bidding and delivery of projects.
  • Leads the use and exploitation of Building Information Modelling (BIM) working to BIM protocols and definition.



  • Demonstrates commitment and leadership by creating a culture and set of behaviours on the project that supports BYLOR’s HSE Group vision and aspirations.
  • Sets HSE expectations and standards and does not accept anything less.
  • Acts as a role model to the team in HSE commitment and influences and empowers others in respect of HSE.


Nuclear Safety:

  • Recognised as a champion for Nuclear Safety in both decisions and behaviours
  • Ensures that scope activities and associated priorities are aligned to reflect the BYLOR Nuclear Safety culture as a prerequisite
  • Ensures that  the Nuclear Safety message is communicated to all levels of the BYLOR Team


Digital Engineering:

  • Uses the Digital Engineering Functional Matrix, on Digital Engineering Training, for detailed understanding of competencies required at the Competent level.
  • Detailed knowledge of BYLOR Digital Engineering and is able to explain the benefits and applications as appropriate for role.



  • Able to deliver and implement the commercial, contractual, procurement and supply chain management strategies as agreed with operations directors and / or senior leaders.
  • Able to articulate business strategies and translate into briefs for design, procurement etc.

Client and Stakeholder Management:

  • Proactively responds to changes in client and stakeholder needs and expectations.
  • Professionally networks within and beyond BYLOR and is able to draw on these in support of their role as appropriate.
  • Proactively reaches out to understand the client context, needs and requirements, and is aware of the current market and competition and uses this to shape the delivery of outcomes.
