Configuration Manager

Are you able to effectively balance short-term project needs with long-term configuration management goals to ensure sustainability throughout the project lifecycle? Are you comfortable making high-stakes decisions regarding configuration changes and communicating the potential risks to key stakeholders? Are you experienced in fostering collaboration across diverse teams to ensure seamless integration of configuration management practices throughout complex projects?

If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you to join us as our next Configuration Manager at Hinkley Point C!

The Opportunity

As our next Configuration Manager, you’ll play a pivotal role in ensuring seamless integration and coordination of Configuration Management (CM) across the entire HPC Project. This dynamic position involves building and leading a diverse, multidisciplinary team, connecting CM arrangements across all project disciplines and areas to drive consistency and alignment.

Reporting to the Branch Manager for Configuration Management Planning and Identification within the HPC Plant Configuration Function, the successful candidate will directly manage a small team of Configuration Engineers. However, the broader team will be significantly larger, comprising members matrixed from key areas such as Design, Delivery, Quality, Commissioning, and Operations. This is an exciting opportunity to lead a collaborative effort that underpins the success of one of the most ambitious projects in the industry.

Pay, benefits and culture

Alongside a salary range of £72,000 - £82,000 and a market-leading pension scheme, your package will include a range of benefits, from the big and formal to the small and personal.

We’re talking about everything from enhanced parental leave to electric vehicle leasing, health insurance to product discounts, critical illness insurance to technology vouchers, gym membership to season ticket loans.

At EDF UK, we embrace flexibility while recognising that everyone's working needs are different. Whether you're in our office spaces, on site, or working remotely, we promote an environment that supports collaboration, connection, and comfort. No matter where you are, our priority is to make sure you feel safe, valued, and celebrated.

Here, we do right by each other and everyone’s welcome. We’re on an action-oriented journey, championing equity, diversity, and inclusion. We’d like our future workforce to have an equal gender balance, represent a broad mix of people from minority ethnic backgrounds, LGBTQ+, those with a disability and supporting social mobility.

We’re a disability confident employer and we’ll do all we can to help with your application. Please let us know if you need to request reasonable adjustments.

We take pride in fostering a dynamic and inclusive environment, where the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our employees drive fresh thinking and innovation. We understand that success means different things to different people. We believe there are multiple definitions of what it means to succeed. That’s why we support you to pursue a career that’s unique to you. Because success is personal.

What you will be doing

In this role, you will lead the development and ownership of the HPC Configuration Management Policy and Strategy, ensuring alignment across the project. You’ll establish robust management processes, maintain the CM-related Quality Management System, and review CM plans and guidance, offering strategic direction where needed. Key responsibilities include managing the Configuration Management Forum, driving Communities of Practice, and developing training packages such as e-learning. You’ll also act as the main point of contact for audits and regulator queries and present the CM risk profile to Project Directors through Configuration Control Boards. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Lead the Health, Safety, and Welfare responsibilities for direct reports.
  • Operate at Team Leader level to build and maintain strong relationships between Plant Configuration and key HPC Project stakeholders.
  • Develop reporting frameworks to clearly demonstrate the level of Configuration Management (CM) risk faced by the HPC Project.
  • Identify recurring shortfalls and support escalations to ensure effective and fit-for-purpose resolutions.
  • Establish processes to preserve a robust “Corporate Memory” of configuration data, ensuring its availability for the Commissioning and Operational phases.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for process-related queries and internal/external regulator interventions regarding Configuration Management.
  • Maintain and refine Integrated Management Systems (IMS) processes, guidance, and templates in alignment with Design Processes and Delivery Contracts.
  • Collaborate with the Data and Tools team to promote data-centric approaches to Configuration Management where practical and beneficial.

Who you are

To excel in this role, you'll need a strong commitment to science/engineering/nuclear professionalism, combined with exceptional communication skills at all levels of the organisation. You must be able to influence and guide others, using strategies ranging from offering advice to providing clear direction. Success will also depend on your ability to anticipate, manage, and resolve issues related to Configuration monitoring. Critical thinking is essential, especially when making "fit for purpose" decisions, understanding the associated risks, and effectively communicating those risks across the project. Additional requirements for this role include:

  • Proven experience in Project Management or Project Engineering on large-scale or complex engineering/construction projects. Familiarity with HPC Configuration Management processes and data structures is a plus.
  • Solid understanding of Configuration Management fundamentals and its importance in project success.
  • Strong decision-making skills with the ability to escalate and resolve issues efficiently.
  • Quick learner with a demonstrated problem-solving mindset.
  • Skilled in building strong relationships and managing both internal and external stakeholders within a complex organisation.
  • Knowledge of Nuclear Power Station design and operation is a bonus, but not a requirement.

Why Join Us?

For more than 60 years, nuclear power stations in the UK have been quietly keeping Britain fuelled with massive amounts of home-grown energy.

Our teams up and down the country are proudly continuing to serve the nation – but they also have an eye on the future.

EDF is leading the UK's nuclear renaissance with the construction of a new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point C and plans for a new power station at Sizewell C in Suffolk.

Nuclear power is the most reliable, low-carbon energy source currently available to the UK. EDF is playing a key role in the development of nuclear sites, while Hinkley Point C will provide low-carbon electricity to meet 7% of the UK demand. The project is already making a positive impact on the local and national economy as well as boosting skills and education.

We’re not just building new nuclear power stations. We’re developing careers, upskilling generations and creating thousands of employment and apprenticeship opportunities across a variety of skills areas.

It takes a special kind of person to work in the nuclear energy industry and although we have thousands of them there’s always a need for more.

Our industry has a mind-boggling range of opportunities and more jobs, and in more places, than you might think. But it’s also an industry which is changing.

We’re a responsible business and proud to be Britain’s biggest generator of zero carbon electricity. With size, age and experience, we believe we can do even more.
