Building Lead Engineer

Hinkley Point C, Bridgwater – with flexibility of working from home, minimum 3 days a week in the onsite.

Are you a passionate civil engineer ready to take the next step in your career? Do you have expertise in building design and concrete structures? Are you the type of person who likes a fast-paced environment and likes to be challenged? If so, join EDF as a Building Lead Engineer!

The Opportunity

EDF EPR Engineering UK (EPR-E) is tasked with delivering the design for several nuclear island (NI) buildings, systems, and equipment contracts for the Hinkley Point C EPR Project. This involves working through an integrated team, supporting HPC construction and commissioning efforts, and preparing design replication feasibility and engineering activities for the Sizewell C Project. As a result, a Technical Directorate is being established to oversee the engineering disciplines and technical expertise needed to successfully deliver these projects through EPR-E’s integrated teams.

As a Building Lead Engineer, you’ll support field design activities for the civil works discipline in a dedicated area, managing design modifications and clarifications raised before and during on-site construction. Additionally, you’ll provide technical expertise as part of the Joint Design Organisation (JDO), an integrated team led by the HPC Client (NNB) and composed of EDVANCE, CNEPE, and Contractors responsible for detailed design studies. The role also involves contributing to problem resolution during the construction phases and supporting testing and commissioning operations at the HPC EPR site.

Pay, benefits and culture

Alongside a salary from £53,000 to £65,000 and a market-leading pension scheme, your package will include a range of benefits, from the big and formal to the small and personal.

We’re talking about everything from enhanced parental leave to electric vehicle leasing, health insurance to product discounts, critical illness insurance to technology vouchers, gym membership to season ticket loans.

At EDF UK, we embrace flexibility while recognising that everyone's working needs are different. Whether you're in our office spaces, on site, or working remotely, we promote an environment that supports collaboration, connection, and comfort. No matter where you are, our priority is to make sure you feel safe, valued, and celebrated.

Here, we do right by each other and everyone’s welcome. We’re on an action-oriented journey, championing equity, diversity, and inclusion. We’d like our future workforce to have an equal gender balance, represent a broad mix of people from minority ethnic backgrounds, LGBTQ+, those with a disability and supporting social mobility.

We’re a disability confident employer and we’ll do all we can to help with your application. Please let us know if you need to request reasonable adjustments.

We take pride in fostering a dynamic and inclusive environment, where the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our employees drive fresh thinking and innovation. We understand that success means different things to different people. We believe there are multiple definitions of what it means to succeed. That’s why we support you to pursue a career that’s unique to you. Because success is personal.

What you’ll be doing

  • You’ll lead and oversee the quality of design package modifications within your scope, ensuring compliance with surveillance requirements. You will monitor and manage the production of impacted deliverables and collaborate with back-office teams on civil design interfaces.
  • You’ll work closely with the client (project team and intelligent customer) and other disciplines within the Joint Design Organisation (JDO) to support the overall project. Additionally, you’ll assist the JDO Civil Team Lead by addressing production, technical, and quality needs for the civil team.
  • You’ll be responsible for approving updates to deliverables previously issued by back-office teams, ensuring continuity and consistency of design modifications, and maintaining compliance with established methods, referential, tools, processes, and delegated authorities. You’ll also safeguard the Responsible Designer’s interests in the JDO, focusing on intellectual property and accountability for design modifications. You’ll ensure the timely and high-quality production of necessary deliverables to support the project’s progress.

Who you are

  • You’ll bring expertise in civil engineering, with a focus on building design within the nuclear industry. Skilled in managing the interface between design and construction, you’ll have proficiency in concrete structure design, Structural Civil Work, and a thorough understanding of the ETC-C code and nuclear safety requirements. Familiarity with 2D and 3D design software is a strong advantage.
  • Your experience will include supporting on-site design activities and managing complex structures, ideally within nuclear civil works or large-scale projects such as HPC or previous EPRs. You’ll have excellent interpersonal and organisational skills and able to prioritise tasks, manage multiple interfaces, and collaborate with downstream disciplines to ensure successful delivery of commitments and deadlines.

If this sounds like you then we’d love to hear from you!

Why Join Us?

For more than 60 years, nuclear power stations in the UK have been quietly keeping Britain fuelled with massive amounts of home-grown energy.

Our teams up and down the country are proudly continuing to serve the nation – but they also have an eye on the future.

EDF is leading the UK's nuclear renaissance with the construction of a new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point C and plans for a new power station at Sizewell C in Suffolk.

Nuclear power is the most reliable, low-carbon energy source currently available to the UK. EDF is playing a key role in the development of nuclear sites, while Hinkley Point C will provide low-carbon electricity to meet 7% of the UK demand. The project is already making a positive impact on the local and national economy as well as boosting skills and education.

We’re not just building new nuclear power stations. We’re developing careers, upskilling generations and creating thousands of employment and apprenticeship opportunities across a variety of skills areas.

It takes a special kind of person to work in the nuclear energy industry and although we have thousands of them there’s always a need for more.

Our industry has a mind-boggling range of opportunities and more jobs, and in more places, than you might think. But it’s also an industry which is changing.

We’re a responsible business and proud to be Britain’s biggest generator of zero carbon electricity. With size, age and experience, we believe we can do even more.
