What you’ll be doing

This role involves supporting the design and development of safety-critical, software-based control and protection systems, ensuring they adhere to strict industry standards. Your expertise will help maintain the integrity and reliability of EDF’s nuclear operations, contributing to both new build projects and the existing fleet.

You’ll be responsible for qualifying software-based equipment, performing software assurance activities such as code analysis, audits, and preparing essential safety documentation. You’ll also support the design and development of software modifications and provide technical guidance on the software aspects of safety related instrumentation and control (I&C) systems, covering everything from small commercial off-the-shelf devices to large-scale plant computer systems.

Beyond technical project work, you’ll have the opportunity to collaborate on software-related research projects and contribute to training initiatives. Engaging with internal and external stakeholders, including regulators, will be key in addressing technical challenges and ensuring compliance with safety and operational requirements.

Who you are

You’ll bring a range of skills and experience, such as the specification, design, implementation, verification, and validation of complex (preferably high integrity safety-related) software. While experience in these areas is valuable, we provide development opportunities to equip you with the necessary training. Even if you haven’t worked in the nuclear industry before, we welcome applicants from all sectors.

You’ll have knowledge of the software development lifecycle, including safety-related software testing and analysis methods/tools. An understanding of complex logic devices like FPGAs or microprocessor-based systems, as well as experience with legacy and current plant protection and control system software technologies, will be beneficial. An understanding of software failure modes and how they are managed would be useful.

While a degree (or equivalent) in a relevant engineering, computer science, mathematics, or science discipline is important, we are not expecting you to have experience in every area listed. We’re looking for engineers who are either generalists across most of these areas or specialists in one or more.

If this sounds like you then we’d love to hear from you!

For this role you must have evidence of right to work in the UK. As a project, we do not discriminate on the grounds of age, gender, race, colour, religion, disability or sexual orientation, and we welcome applications from all sections of the community.

Why Join Us?

For more than 60 years, nuclear power stations in the UK have been quietly keeping Britain fuelled with massive amounts of home-grown energy.

Our teams up and down the country are proudly continuing to serve the nation – but they also have an eye on the future.

EDF is leading the UK's nuclear renaissance with the construction of a new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point C and plans for a new power station at Sizewell C in Suffolk.

Nuclear power is the most reliable, low-carbon energy source currently available to the UK. EDF is playing a key role in the development of nuclear sites, while Hinkley Point C will provide low-carbon electricity to meet 7% of the UK demand. The project is already making a positive impact on the local and national economy as well as boosting skills and education.

We’re not just building new nuclear power stations. We’re developing careers, upskilling generations and creating thousands of employment and apprenticeship opportunities across a variety of skills areas.

It takes a special kind of person to work in the nuclear energy industry and although we have thousands of them there’s always a need for more.

Our industry has a mind-boggling range of opportunities and more jobs, and in more places, than you might think. But it’s also an industry which is changing.

We’re a responsible business and proud to be Britain’s biggest generator of zero carbon electricity. With size, age and experience, we believe we can do even more.
