Location: Aztec West with some flexibility of working from home and with regular travel to HPC site.
 

The Opportunity
 

The Hinkley Point C (HPC) central Environment Team (based in Aztec West, Bristol) is currently looking to recruit an Environmental Compliance Specialist to join the Environmental Compliance Team.  The team is responsible for providing assurance oversight to the construction, installation and commissioning of the HPC New Nuclear Power Station including ensuring that the construction, installation and commissioning phases are conducted in line with best practice and in compliance with all relevant environmental legislation and project sustainability requirements. The team is also responsible for leading the regulatory interface on these topics and supporting production of appropriate written arrangements to ensure compliance.


The team is also responsible for the HPC ISO 14001 certification and the project Environmental Management System.


As Environmental Compliance Specialist, you will play a pivotal role in delivering the full range of compliance and assurance activities of the Team including undertaking Self-Assessments, liaising with Regulators, Contractors and site-based colleagues and Teams.
 

The role is varied and offers the opportunity to work on a wide range of issues across the construction, installation and commissioning of HPC.
 

The Person
 

  • As the Environmental Compliance Specialist, you will be responsible for providing compliance support across a number of environmental and sustainability areas covering the construction, installation and commissioning phases of HPC. This will include assurance assessments of the activities conducted by contractors and partner organisations on site and across the HPC Associated Developments.
  • As the HPC project moves from civils into the mechanical and electrical installation phases, and ultimately on to commissioning, fuelling and operations of the Power Station this is an exciting time to join the project with a focus on complex installations and high hazard activities.
  • The specific role will require the individual to work alongside the Site Based Environment Team and our Contract Partners to identify areas of the project that require environmental consents and authorisations, compliance and assurance focus, are reportable or recordable under our environmental consents or require specific written arrangements prior to commencement in accordance with our environmental consents and Development Consent Order.
  • The role will at times require the individual to attend the construction site at HPC and the HPC Associated Development sites, conduct inspections and audits and work with Project Managers and members of the delivery teams to enable successful delivery of the construction programme in a compliance manner.
  • You will also work closely with the rest of the wider Environment Team to provide support in line with a “best athlete” approach to delivery.  You will also provide direct support to the Head of Environment and the Environment Managers to ensure relevant company processes and governance arrangement are complied with at all times.
     

The Skills
 

Essential

 

  • Broad knowledge of the UK environment regulatory framework and experience of implementing these requirements, e.g. experience working in areas of environmental management and compliance.
  • Degree qualified or equivalent in an environment or related discipline.
  • Experience of working with and developing good relationships with environmental regulators (e.g. Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales, Natural England, Marine Management Organisation etc.)
  • A well developed skill-set with regard to communication with, and management of consultants and contractors.
  • Flexibility, adaptability, autonomy, and a strong questioning attitude.


Desirable

 

  • Experience of working within the construction or other high hazard industry.
  • Experience of working with complex environmental permits / consents.
  • Membership of professional environmental institution and Chartered Environmentalist (or equivalent).
