Managing Legal Counsel - Commercial (Sizewell C)

Location:  London, with occasional site/ supplier visits (hybrid working.)

Employment type: Permanent full-time/ part-time.
Employment basis: The role is expected to be a full- time position however we are open to discussing a more flexible or part- time approach where possible.

Sizewell C represents a transformative leap towards sustainable energy production in the UK. Once built, this nuclear power station located in Suffolk will generate enough low carbon electricity to supply over six million homes annually. By reducing carbon emissions by approximately nine million tonnes per year compared to traditional gas-fired plants, Sizewell C stands as a beacon of environmental responsibility and technological advancement.

The Role


As Managing Legal Counsel for Sizewell C, you will provide strategic and operational legal advice across all aspects of the project. You will work closely with senior leadership, the wider legal team, external stakeholders, and government bodies, ensuring legal compliance, managing risk, and supporting the successful delivery of this critical infrastructure project


Key Responsibilities


In this role, you’ll:

 

  • Provide expert legal advice on complex and high-value matters, particularly related to construction and supply chain contracts.
  • Lead the management of intricate, high-risk legal issues, developing strategic solutions that align with business goals.
  • Ensure compliance with financing, investment requirements, regulatory standards, and ESG commitments in all contracts.
  • Draft, negotiate, and manage key contracts, proactively identifying and resolving potential disputes.
  • Continuously improve legal systems, policies, and procedures through best practices.
  • Stay abreast of legislative changes and ensure the legal team and business units are informed and compliant.
  • Collaborate with various business departments, providing legal support for day-to-day operations and strategic initiatives.


Leadership Responsibilities:

 

  • Manage and mentor a team of lawyers, paralegals, interns, and trainees, fostering their professional growth and engagement.
  • Support senior legal management in anticipating capacity needs and workflow challenges.
  • Oversee the legal team budget, manage relationships with external law firms, and ensure effective budget management.
  • Serve as a senior point of reference for business stakeholders, keeping senior legal counsel informed on key matters.
  • Continuously enhance the processes and systems that define the operations of the Sizewell C legal team.


Qualifications and Experience

 

  • Admission as a solicitor in England & Wales or an equivalent common law jurisdiction.
  • Extensive post-qualification experience, ideally with a strong background in construction supply chain contracts (NEC and FIDIC).
  • Proven experience in line management and a proactive, business-focused service approach.
  • In-house legal experience and experience with infrastructure projects are highly desirable.
  • Fluency in English, strong commercial acumen, excellent communication and negotiation skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
