BYLOR is a joint venture between Bouygues TP, a worldwide construction organisation with considerable experience in the nuclear sector, and Laing O'Rourke, the UK's largest privately-owned engineering and construction contractor.


Together we hold one of the largest contracts to build the new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point C in Somerset. Bylor is pushing the boundaries of innovation and modern technology while delivering high quality construction on a massive scale. Bylor has already broken the UK record for the largest continuous concrete pour of 9,000m3 of concrete, this is a great opportunity to be part of a dynamic organisation that is challenging the industry and making history. 


You will be part of the delivery team on building Europe's largest construction project and working on the first new nuclear power station to be built in the UK for over 30 years. Your input, expertise and passion will enable us to complete the project safely, to the required level of quality, on time and on budget. this is a great opportunity to be part of a dynamic organisation that is challenging the industry and making history.


In this role, you will be responsible for the construction of the steel reinforcement which forms a vital part of any concrete structure. You will work with various diameters of steel that will need to be cut to length, bent to shape and fixed together, following the exact specification shown in the drawings or digital model. 

The work will be predominantly outdoors, you will be required to work closely with our Formwork Carpenters and Concrete Operatives to ensure productivity is maximised. On-site training and experience will be complemented by an extensive construction college apprenticeship programme that will lead to you becoming a competent Steel Fixer. Working in the Nuclear environment you will be working to exacting standards.

Main Duties: 

 

  • Setting out the work area, following engineering plans
  • Using hand and power tools to cut and bend bars or mesh
  • Tying rebar (reinforcement bars) together with wire, clips or welds to build up sections
  • Fitting spacers and 'chairs' (support)
  • Fixing the wooden formwork and shuttering used to hold setting concrete in place
  • Fixing steel to concrete bases
  • Installing beams and pre-cast slabs
  • Working closely with engineering designers, steel erectors and other construction workers


Qualifications/Experience : 

 

  • GCSEs Grades 4-9, (A - C) in Maths and English or equivalent.
  • Ability to Follow engineering instructions and technical charts and diagrams 
  • Basic knowledge of building and construction 
  • Enthusiastic
  • Genuine interest in construction
  • Physically fit
  • Excellent timekeeping and attendance
  • To be thorough and pay attention to detail 
  • Patience and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations 
  • The ability to work well with others 
  • The ability to use your initiative 
  • Physical skills like movement, coordination, dexterity and grace 
  • Sensitivity and understanding 
  • The ability to work well with your hands 
  • To be able to carry out basic tasks on a computer or hand-held device


You will need a good eye for detail and the ability to follow engineering instructions and technical charts and diagrams. Good maths skills are essential to work out and follow precise measurements. Steel fixer jobs are physically demanding and involve heavy lifting, a suitable level of fitness is required, you will be bending and working at heights and your working environment may be noisy, dirty, demanding and outdoors in all weathers.


You will need to wear safety clothing and use safety equipment and adhere to the HPC Project Values.

 

You will need to complete your Apprenticeship course work alongside working on site with gathering evidence of your progression.

Overtime and shift work may be required so flexibility is a must. Regular worked site hours are 48 per week and college 39 per week, subject to change.

Weekly wages range from £250 - £630 per week, reflecting rates for different ages and working hours between 39 & 48 hours per week.

Other travel & accommodation allowances are accessible whilst on site dependent on individual circumstances. These are applied on top of the above figures.

Income potential during this apprenticeship with BYLOR is very generous once additional allowances are factored in and as you develop skills, knowledge and behaviours.

* You must be 18 years of over.
* Eligibility without restrictions to work in the UK.
* Vetted to Nuclear security standards.  
* Full mobility to enable independent travel to College.
